The use of carbon dioxide laser for eyelid surgery has certain advantages over the traditional “cold knife” approach. Laser can be used to incise the skin in a very controlled fashion that results in a “bloodless” surgical field. As a result the surgeon has excellent view of the anatomy, the procedure time is reduced significantly and the potential for complications from bleeding are minimized. The fatty tissue is artistically sculpted using a fine and precise laser beam instead of cutting. In addition postoperatively the amount of bruising seems to be less and the recovery time (also known as downtime) is reduced significantly allowing the person to resume his /her routine lifestyle sooner.
Another advantage of having the carbon dioxide laser available is the ability to treat the surface of the skin at the same time. This offers a great benefit to the overall goal for eyelid rejuvenation mainly for two reasons. First the skin is already anesthetized for the surgical procedure so Dr. Glavas may use the appropriate settings to achieve the maximum effect on the skin without causing patient discomfort. Second by treating the skin surface with the laser it is possible not only to reduce pigment and other dyschromias but also tighten the surface; something not possible when using the traditional non laser technique.
Laser blepharoplasty may be used for both upper and lower lid surgery.
